Aetna vs. United Insurance Company of AmericaWhen looking to fill your family’s insurance needs, it is a good idea to compare one company’s insurance coverages with another’s. This will assist you in making an informed decision on choosing the right insurance providers. This will be a comparison of the various insurance coverages of Aetna Insurance Company and United Insurance Company of America.

Aetna Overview:

Aetna Insurance offers health insurance, life insurance and long-term care insurance. All of these are comprehensive and can be individual member-paid plans or in conjunction with a group plan offered by an employer. Aetna also can be a Medicare supplemental insurance provider to a retiree.

Here are the main points of Aetna’s policies:

Individual Health Insurance:

Early retirees, self-employed individuals and people on COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) can purchase a health insurance plan comprised of the following:

  • Major Medical
  • Protects Entire Family
  • Access to Care

There are two types of health insurance plans in the individual category:

Managed Care

There is a specific network of doctors, other specialists and hospitals under the Managed Care individual plan.

Managed Care can be broken down further, as follows:

  • HMO (or Health Maintenance Organization)
  • PPO (Preferred Provider Organization)
  • POS (or Point of Service) plans

One advantage of Aetna’s Managed Care Plans is that individual policyholders can enroll in Health Savings Accounts (or HSA) for saving tax-free money for medical bills, like share of cost or prescription coverage.

Traditional Indemnity Coverage

This type of health insurance policy pays for covered medical care based on the service or procedure being done. No matter which doctor you go to, they pay the same amount. However, with a Managed Care Plan, the insurance plan will only pay for services provided by certain doctors.

Retiree Supplemental Health Insurance

Aetna offers two types of Medicare supplemental health insurance coverage:

Aetna Medicare Plan (PPO)

This plan offers a network of providers, locally and nationally.

Aetna Medicare Plan (HMO)

This plan offers more predictable medical costs and a larger network of providers.

Both Supplemental Aetna Medicare Plans offer drug coverage, in addition to an additional stand-alone prescription drug coverage.

More Aetna Coverages:

Aetna AARP Health Insurance:

Aetna/AARP offers individual and family health insurance for people between the ages of 19 and 64. This is basically the same as the HMO (or Health Maintenance Organization), PPO (Preferred Provider Organization), and POS (or Point of Service) plans previously detailed. With this Aetna/AARP insurance, dental care is covered as well.

They offer another type of health insurance policy called AARP Essential Power Health Insurance. This is for people between the ages of 50 and 64 and is essentially an Aetna policy that has teamed up with AARP to offer certain advantages.

Here are some of the advantages offered by the AARP Essential Premier Health Insurance Plan:

  • Preventative care
  • Tax advantages
  • Assistance with health information
  • Travel coverage
  • No co-pay flu shots
  • Routine colonoscopies
  • Office visits, physical exams, GYN exams and Mammograms
  • Eye exams yearly
  • Eyewear discounts
  • Higher Ambulance Benefit
  • Unlimited enhanced hospice coverage with no lifetime maximum amount.

Aetna Life Insurance

Aetna offers five types of life insurance:

Basic Term Life

This life insurance is for your family’s protection, should you die. The policyholder assigns who his beneficiaries should be. After death, the policyholder’s beneficiaries will receive a cash payout for the amount guaranteed by the life insurance policy.

Supplemental Term Life

This policy provides an amount of coverage over and above the amount provided for in a basic term insurance policy. This policy has a pre-determined dollar payout, depending upon how much life insurance was purchased prior to the death of the policy holder.

Accidental Death & Personal Loss

This insurance provides a cash payout to the policyholder, should he receive qualifying injuries during an accident. The amount received is determined by the injuries received in the accident and the amount of coverage.

Dependent Life Insurance Coverage

Dependent Life Insurance Coverage costs almost nothing. It features a cash payout in the event one of your dependents dies. The amount of money received will depend upon the amount and level of insurance purchased.

Dependent Accidental Death & Personal Loss

This covers Accidental Death & Personal Loss over and above your Accidental Death & Personal Loss policy. There is a payout to the parents or guardian of a dependent spouse or child. The amount of the payout depends upon the amount of coverage purchased.

Aetna Long-Term Care Insurance

As people age, 60% of them will, at some point in their lives, need long-term care. This need can arise from a medical problem, such as a heart attack or a debilitating stroke. It can also result from a catastrophic accident.

When disaster strikes and you (or a family member) is unable to provide basic care, here are the things that long-term care will provide:

  • Nursing and/or medical aide care, around the clock
  • Transportation to and from doctor’s appointments – 90 days or more of care and services to a person who has been incapacitated. This care would consist of assistance in eating, dressing, bathing, moving from chair to bed or vice versa and cognitive stimulation for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other mental impairments.
