Aetna includes dental insurance with low cost insurance plans, such as the Dental Maintenance Organization. Members can select their own primary care dentist. For special dental needs, the primary dentist can provide referrals. For DMO plan holders where orthodontia is covered, no referral is needed.

There are also no deductibles and no annual maximums. Preferred Provider Organization and Participating Dental Network affiliated dentists cost less, though annual maximums and deductibles are applied. The same is true with the Dental Indemnity Plan. AETNA also offers Vital Savings, a dental discount program on general dentistry.

American Family Insurance offers individual and company insurance plans that cover everything from the simplest dental needs to root canals and other serious dental problems. The company also provides reduced cost plans, and the chance to gain access to great dentists. Claims are processed quickly, and all members are provided with tips and tools for free.

AETNA members can save money on vision care, including eye exams, lenses, glasses and LASIK. Professionals affiliated are Pearle Vision, JCPenney Optical, LensCrafters, Sears Optical and Target Optical.

American Family Insurance does not offer specific plans for vision coverage. However, vision coverage is included in its Health Insurance Services plan.

Life Insurance

Aetna offers Basic Term Life, Supplemental Life Insurance, Accidental Death and Personal Loss Coverage, Dependent Life Insurance and Dependent AD and PL. All of these are available to all members.

These plans are also offered with Accelerated Death Benefits for terminally ill members. Members can also opt for conversion for retirees and those who no longer belong to the eligible class. Premium Waiver offers continuation of life insurance coverage even without premium payments for those suffering from a disability before a pre-determined age.

American Family Insurance offers Term Life Insurance, which includes temporary protection with no cash value. Its Whole Life Insurance guarantees no increase in premiums and lifetime protection with cash value. Universal Life Insurance, on the other hand, is offered with flexible premiums. It can be applied for from birth until a person is 80 years of age.

Health Expense Funds

AETNA offers a Health Savings Account that allows members to earn tax free interest. Policy holders own this account even after changing employers. The Program for Health Reimbursement Arrangement is also available. Employers contribute to this program, and remaining money is carried over every year. In addition, the company offers Flexible Spending Accounts intended for individual and dependent health care expenses. However, unused money is forfeited at the end of the plan year.

American Family does not offer such products and services. However, its employees are given benefits like the FSA.

Behavioral, Mental Health and Disability Coverage

AETNA Behavioral and Mental Health Coverage includes behavioral health evaluation assessments, behavioral health treatment and case and disease management. Meanwhile, disability coverage is offered with both short and long-term plans. Coverage amounts are based on yearly income, incentives and other receivables from the employer.

American Family Insurance offers disability coverage, but not for mental and behavioral health. Depending on location, American Family Insurance provides support for total disability and accidental death and dismemberment. However, this may only be applicable in some states.

Which Insurance Company is Better?

Both AETNA and American Family Insurance have been providing insurance for a long time. While businesses are much better off with American Family Insurance, students may be better served by AETNA.
