Aetna vs. Columbian Mutual Life Insurance

Choosing an insurance provider is a bigger decision than you might imagine. Select the wrong one, and you may be in for unwanted surprises at a most inopportune time in your life. There are many reasons to choose one insurance company over another, as people have various needs for coverage.

Whether it be medical, dental, life, group or even pharmacy insurance, the great number of companies that exist for consumers to choose from is truly overwhelming. Two companies that offer a range of insurance services are Aetna and Columbian Mutual Life Insurance Company. To compare them side-by-side we must examine separately what each of them offers.

Options for Health Insurance Through Aetna

Medical insurance coverage is on the top of most people’s lists. Through Aetna you can get medical insurance that will cover your basic medical needs like:

  • Regular doctor’s visits
  • Prescriptions
  • Emergency room visits

When you begin thinking about medical insurance coverage through Aetna you will want to visit their website to determine what additional features you need to add to a basic medical insurance plan and what payment options are best for you.

Do you feel more comfortable with a high deductible and low monthly payments or would you rather pay higher out-of-pocket costs every month to avoid paying huge deductibles when you do need medical attention? Also, you will need to consider whether you need brand name prescription coverage or if generic will be enough, and if you need additional services like chiropractic or optometry.

Aetna Dental and Vision Coverage

In addition to medical insurance, Aetna offers separate dental and vision insurance programs to give you full coverage in those areas. Dental coverage is something you typically must purchase separately in addition to a medical insurance plan and vision is sometimes offered, but is usually limited.

Aetna offers three different dental coverages that will include a variation of dental services like yearly cleanings, regular office visits with a primary care dentist and small procedures. Things like major surgery or orthodontic work usually require high deductibles before Aetna begins to pay. Choose from any of these three plans, according to the extent of your dental care needs.

  • Dental Maintenance Organization (DMO) plan
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) or Participating Dental Network (PDN)
  • Dental Indemnity plan
If you’re having trouble choosing between HMO, PPO or indemnity dental insurance, Aetna can help you make the decision.

A medical insurance plan obtained through Aetna may or may not include optometry visits. To be sure that you are maintaining your health in a well-rounded way, you can add the Aetna VisionSM discount program to your medical insurance coverage. This is not an insurance plan but simply a discount program used in addition to medical coverage.

The Aetna VisionSM discount program offers:

  • savings on eye exams
  • savings on contact lenses and eyeglasses
  • savings on optometric procedures like LASIK surgery

Other Types of Insurance Coverage Offered by Aetna

Aetna is more than just a private health insurance company. You can benefit from plans that will protect your assets, your income and even your family if the worst should happen. Some of the additional coverage options offered by Aetna are listed below.

Disability Insurance:

Short term disability coverage will pay you weekly in the event that you are injured and must miss work. Long term disability coverage will pay you monthly if you are injured and out of work. You must miss a certain amount of days of work and provide thorough medical documentation to start collecting benefits that are determined by how much you were making while you were able to work.

Columbian Mutual Life Insurance Health Coverage

Columbian Mutual is a public insurance company which means you’ll pay lower premiums and, in the event that you need a pay-off from an accident or other incident, you will always be able to collect from the company because it is financed by taxpayers and so will not go bankrupt.

One downfall is the variety of coverage options that are offered. Columbian Mutual provides the following in terms of medical coverage:

Supplemental Medicare plan

This is designed to supplement Medicare coverage for plans A and B but is limited to Oregon, Arizona, Idaho and Washington. You can choose from three different types of sub-plans based on what your budget is and what your medical needs are. The benefits include payment for hospitalization after Medicare benefits have run out, outpatient services and hospice care.

Student Insurance plan

This plan offers an all-inclusive option to people in college, just graduated from college or just between jobs and not eligible to be covered under their parent’s insurance. It is offered under the name Best Benefits Discount Medical Plan and includes the following benefits.

  • Vision
  • Dental
  • Accidents and Sickness
  • Travel Assistance
  • Prescription

Life Insurance Coverage Through Columbian Mutual

This insurance company offers a lot more in terms of life insurance than they do medical. You must contact an independent insurance agent contracted through Columbian Mutual to secure a plan. In addition to insurance plans such as,

  • Whole Life
  • Term Life
  • Universal Life
  • Group Life

Columbian Mutual provides accidental death coverage, insurance riders for death benefits and waivers of premium.

What We Know About Aetna versus Columbian Mutual Life Insurance

Although both companies have a lot to offer the consumer, one will outweigh the other based on what your particular insurance needs are. If you are seeking life insurance, for example, Columbian Mutual has more options for you to choose from and specializes in this form of insurance.

Aetna will not offer supplemental insurance for Medicare recipients. Likewise, Aetna is limited in life insurance policies but offers a plethora of possible medical, dental and vision plans. Consider your needs when making your final decision and the process should be rather painless.
