When comparing Humana, a traditional insurance provider and AFLAC, a non-traditional insurer, there are many points to consider, including what type of coverage is offered, whether you have an existing insurance policy, and whether you would need cash benefits in the event you are unable to work after an illness or injury.

Humana Insurance
Compared to AFLAC, Humana is a traditional insurance company that provides specified benefit options for covered services, illnesses, and injuries. This coverage is paid directly to the provider, and no cash benefits are paid to subscribers.
Types of Humana Insurance Company Policies
Humana Insurance Company offers a variety of policies for consumers, including:
- Humana Medicare
- Humana for individuals
- Humana through employers
Humana does not offer insurance coverage in all states. Consumers located in New York, California, or New Mexico are not able to apply for Humana coverage. Not all Humana options are available in each geographic area served by Humana. Consumers must search by their state of residence to determine which policies are available to them.
Humana Medicare
Under Humana Medicare policies, consumers may choose from coverage to complement their Medicare insurance. Options include:
- Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans for Plan A, B, C, F, G, K, L, and N.
- Prescription Coverage, depending on geographic area, includes three options for Medicare Part D. These are stand-alone prescription drug programs separate from Medicare prescription drug coverage. These plans include Humana Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan (PDP), Humana Enhanced (PDP), and Humana Complete (PDP).
- Medicare Advantage Plans under Humana include Humana Gold Choice (PFFS), which allows for flexibility in the choice of a medical provider, Humana Gold Plus (HMO) which requires that members select a provider from a network, and HumanaChoice(PPO), which allows for some flexibility while keeping costs affordable.
Humana for Individuals
Individuals may purchase Humana insurance plans for medical, dental, and vision coverage. Humana also offers prescription drug coverage to individuals, including mail-order prescriptions. Coverage is available for individuals as well as families.
Types of plans include:
- Copay Plans: These policies require a copay for sick visits and injury-related office visits, and members must select an in-network doctor. This plan also includes coverage for preventive services like annual physical exams and tests. Deductibles and coinsurance options vary, and members can select the best option for their budget.
- 100% After Deductible Plans: These plans pay for most types of medical expenses so long as the provider is in-network. Covered medical services include sick visits and injury-related office visits, which are paid at 100% after meeting the annual individual deductible.
- Health Savings Account Plans: These plans cover federally approved medical services and are often referred to as high deductible plans. Health Savings Account Plans can be used to pay qualified medical expenses such as doctor’s fees and to budget for future medical care expenses.
- Short Term Medical Plans: During temporary periods when a consumer finds himself without medical coverage, short- term medical plans provide protection and coverage for unexpected medical emergencies, illnesses and injuries.

Humana Insurance Through Employers
Employees may receive Humana insurance as a benefit from their employer or by paying Humana directly but via group discounts. Types of Humana insurance through employers include:
- Medical Plans: Medical plans offered by employers include a variety of copay, deductible and health savings account plans.
- Health Savings Accounts: Both employers and employees may contribute funds into a health savings account, which the employee may use to pay for qualified medical and prescription drug expenses.
- Dental Insurance: Humana offers dental insurance for emergency and preventive oral care.
- Vision Care: Through employers, Humana provides vision care including eye exams, screening for diseases of the eye, and corrective lenses.
- Disability and Life Insurance: Employees may elect to purchase disability and life insurance coverage to protect against the loss of income.
Making a Choice
Humana offers traditional insurance packages for consumers to purchase for individual or family coverage. AFLAC is not a traditional health insurance company but provides cash benefits under certain circumstances. Weigh out your coverage needs, budget, and the benefits of each company, and select the company that provides the best policy for you.
