American Republic offers health care supplemental coverage, business insurance and a single life insurance option to families, individuals and businesses. You’ll find a variety of health options with this company. However, the life insurance option is limited to a whole life policy described later in this article.

Amalgamated Life Policies

Amalgamated Life offers several choices of life insurance coverage. The basic group term life policy is available to those eligible members. To be eligible for this coverage, members must be actively at work and working for an employer who offers Amalgamated Life coverage.

The group term life policies offer:

  • Flexible benefit amounts
    Amalgamted Life versus Republic Life
  • Easy conversion from a group term life policy to an individual permanent policy, with no medical underwriting needed
  • Experience rating by age groups
  • Policies from a secure, union-label company

Additional coverage can be purchased and added to the basic group term life policy. This additional coverage can give the policy holder a higher level of benefits or offer coverage to a retired worker or the worker’s family.

The dependent life policy holder can add a lesser amount of life insurance coverage for his or her spouse. The spouse can be insured for up to half of the benefit amount of the policy holder, for a maximum of $100,000. A member can insure all of their children with a benefit amount of up to $4,000 per child.

The retiree life option is available so that members can continue to carry life insurance coverage even after they are no longer working. Employers may or may not choose to offer this insurance to retired employees. The retiree life insurance policies are usually limited only to retirees, and not to their spouses or children.

Supplemental life insurance coverage is offered in addition to the basic group term life policy. It allows the member to purchase a higher level of benefits for themselves, his or her spouse and his or her dependents.

Amalgamated Policies for Employers

Amalgamated Life offers Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance only in conjunction with its group term life policies. The Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) policy covers members against accidental severe injuries, paralysis or death. Covered accidents may occur on or off the job. Amalgamated Life’s AD&D coverage allows for a payment to the insured (or his or her beneficiary) up to the amount of the member’s basic life benefit.

Amalgamated Life vs. American Republic Insurance Company Life Ins

Amalgamated Life Insurance offers Medical Stop Loss insurance for employers who choose to self-fund healthcare insurance for employees. This prevents an employee’s catastrophic medical claim from having a severe financial impact on the employer.

Amalgamated Life has two Medical Stop Loss plans: specific stop loss and aggregate stop loss. Specific stop loss reduces the financial risk from high-cost individual claims. Aggregate stop loss reduces the financial risk from a high number of claims. You can read some FAQs on Medical Stop Loss plans by visiting this website.

Amalgamated Life offers both short-term disability and long-term disability policies. Short-term disability insurance may or may not require an employee to contribute financially for coverage. A member’s income is protected if disabled due to a non-worksite event like an accident or illness. The amount of benefits and duration of benefits can vary.

Long-term disability is also available in contributory (members must pay into the policy) or noncontributory (members are not required to pay). Like short-term disability, benefits and duration of benefits may vary.

American Republic Insurance Company (ARIC) Policies

The health insurance policies offered by American Republic are supplemental policies to give added benefits to a basic plan. American Republic Insurance Company offers short-term comprehensive medical insurance.

These policies include:

  • Options for deductibles
  • Coverage for hospital and doctor visits
  • Prescription drug coverage

These plans allow the insured to avoid paying for medical coverage for longer than needed.

Amalgamated Life vs. American Republic Insurance CoARIC’s Critical Illness PLUS coverage is used in conjunction with major medical coverage. Benefits are paid when an insured person is diagnosed with a covered critical illness, or has surgery for that illness. This plan offers a lump sum cash benefit and a daily allowance for inpatient hospital care. These benefits are paid regardless of other major medical or supplemental coverage.

Americare supplemental medical plans are meant to complement major medical coverage and offer extra benefits for specific covered events. Coverage and benefit amounts are flexible and cash benefits are paid directly to the insured.

  • CareAssist Short-Term Convalescent Care: American Republic Insurance Company offers this policy to cover nursing home and long term care expenses. These costs are not usually covered by major medical insurance or disability insurance. Members can choose the number of days of coverage, and can use these benefits to receive care at home or in a nursing home or assisted living facility.
  • ExpressPay Life: The company’s ExpressPay Life insurance is a whole life policy which offers cash benefits to the insured’s family to cover funeral costs and other expenses. ExpressPay Life gives cash benefits quickly, without having to wait to settle an estate. There is usually no paperwork to file a claim, and premiums never increase while benefits are never reduced. The cash benefits can be used to pay for anything.
  • Medicare Supplement Insurance: American Republic Insurance Company also offers plans for Medicare eligible individuals over 65 years of age. This coverage pays for care that was approved by Medicare but not paid for by Medicare. These plans can also cover Medicare monetary deductibles, blood deductibles, and medical or long-term care after the limit of Medicare coverage.

This plan allows you to choose your own doctors, hospitals and specialists without referrals, even while traveling.

American Republic also has ExpressLane Automatic Claim Service, which assists with filing claims and doing paperwork quickly and accurately while you are sick or injured.

The Medicare supplement policies are also affordable. Discounts on premiums are given to those in good health, and these premiums are locked in, meaning they are not increased even if your health changes. Discounts are also available for being married or part of a couple, even if your partner is not also applying for coverage.

ARIC’s Medicare supplement insurance also immediately covers any pre-existing health conditions with no waiting period. These policies are also guaranteed renewable for life. This means that as long as your premiums are paid on time, your coverage cannot be canceled, even with a change in health status.

In a head to head competition on life insurance there is no doubt that Amalgamated has more to offer. However, it is mainly to benefit groups in a workplace. Even if you are an individual, however, you may be able to get a policy. The premium won’t be as competitive as if you were part of a group.

Amalgamated Life vs. American Republic Insurance Comp

American Republic only offers the ExpressLife whole life insurance policy. For a person who mainly wants an investment policy to cover end of life expenses like funeral costs, this may be enough. Read more on this type of burial policy at the link here.

Unlike Amalgamated, this company’s emphasis is more on supplemental health policies. If you know this is what you need, it might make sense to get your life policy from them as well.
