Its life insurance policy holders are individuals, but virtually all of those policy holders have come to Amalgamated Life through association with a labor union that is the actual customer. The company’s other primary customer group is that comprised of organizational benefit trust funds.

According to Amalgamated Life’s president, the company seeks to support union leaders, fund administrators and associated business agents. Its primary focus in its life insurance business is to assist union leaders in providing affordable benefits programs to union members.

Types of Insurance

Amalgamated Life provides a variety of types of insurance and other services to its target union market. The company’s focus is to assist labor unions in developing benefits packages that members will perceive as being highly valuable to them. Included types of insurance are:

  • Life Insurance
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
  • Medical Stop Loss
  • Disability Insurance
  • Voluntary Insurance

Using its varied product package, Amalgamated Life provides ancillary services to labor union organizations.

It offers assistance to labor unions in developing benefits packages, including reviewing current and future benefits needs, providing valuable benefits programs to specific workplaces, including varied contract rates defined by age groups, and creating benefits programs that provide both security and excellent customer service.

To achieve these goals, Amalgamated Life offers the equivalent of consultancy input and advice relative to benefits packages. Its customer service department includes representatives fluent in several languages, so that Amalgamated Life can provide service to labor unions that count many different nationalities among their membership rolls.

Life Insurance

Amalgamated-Life-Versus-liberty National Life Insurance Company

Amalgamated Life’s life insurance is available in most states, but is not available in all states. Where it is available, it offers basic group term life insurance intended to protect actively employed union members. From the perspective of the union member, a term life insurance policy from Amalgamated Life includes several benefits. Learn more about term life insurance at our website.

Some of the most popular aspects of these programs are the flexible coverage amounts and terms, and the ability to convert to an individual whole life policy, without the need for medical underwriting. Plus there are age group considerations, so that younger union members pay lower term life insurance premiums than do older union members. Finally, the financial stability and union approval go a long ways toward a feeling of security.

Amalgamated Life also offers three types of supplemental life insurance coverage, in addition to the basic term life insurance it extends to union members. Those additional, supplemental types of life insurance are:

  • Amalgamated Life Insurance vs Liberty National Life Insurance

Dependent Life. Union members have the option of purchasing additional life insurance to cover the member’s spouse and dependent children.

  • Retiree Life. Employers can opt for additional insurance coverage that will insure retirees. This option typically covers only the retired individual, excluding the retiree’s spouse and any dependent children. Get an outside opinion on the need for retiree coverage from the Money Over 55 segment here.
  • Supplemental Life. This is insurance that is added onto the individual’s coverage through the employer’s or union’s group term life insurance. It is available to any union member who wants to pay the additional premium associated with the additional life insurance coverage.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

This coverage is not available in all states, and it is an add-on insurance that requires first that the insured be covered by an Amalgamated Life group term life insurance policy.

Up to the amount of the insured’s basic life insurance coverage, this additional insurance becomes payable with any accidental severe injury or accidental death that occurs on or off the job. It also covers paralysis arising from such a severe injury or accident.

Medical Stop Loss

Not available in all states, Amalgamated Life’s Medical Stop Loss is a consultancy service that it offers to labor unions seeking to build effective benefits programs for their members. It defines the types of approaches to health insurance that can be benefit to labor unions as well as their members, offering a $5 million limit to liability.

Amalgamated VS Liberty National Life

Disability Insurance

Also not available in all states, the disability insurance that Amalgamated Life offers its union customers includes both short- and long-term disability insurance plans. Both these types of plans insure against any disability or injury that is not worksite related. For a full discussion of the benefits and drawbacks of disability insurance visit the page noted here.

Short-term disability provides income protection for events that are not worksite related, such as non-work accidents, illness or pregnancy.

The benefits paid to members and the duration of benefits payments vary according to need and type of disability that the insured claims. This coverage is available to labor unions on the basis of member contributions or as a non-contributory benefit.

Long-term disability follows the same pattern, but is reserved for conditions that lead to long-term disability. It also is available to union customers on a contributory or non-contributory basis.

Voluntary Insurance Products

Amalgamated Life Insurance Company VS Liberty National Life Insurance Company

Amalgamated Life offers a variety of add-on products that are available to individual insured policy holders when they become insured through a group Amalgamated Life policy. These voluntary products are defined as “riders” added to basic group term life insurance policies. The company offers five such voluntary products.

  • Workers Life Plus. This is decreasing term life insurance, in which death benefits are highest at early insured ages, decreasing as the insured ages.
  • Workers Life Level. The death benefit remains constant while the insured is employed, but the insured pays increasing premium prices as s/he ages.
  • Critical illness Protection. This insurance provides a lump sum payment when the insured is diagnosed with one of the approved diseases or spends more than 30 consecutive days in a hospital. Approved diseases or conditions include issues such as cancer, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, paralysis, organ transplant or coma. Using the lump sum payment reduces the term life death benefit by the amount of the lump sum payment. Upon returning to work, the insured’s death benefit returns to its original level after two years’ work.
  • Employee Life Option (ELO). This provides a means for the insured to accumulate a cash value without purchasing a whole life insurance product.

Liberty National Life Insurance Company

In business since 1900, Liberty National is headquartered in McKinney, Texas and is licensed in 49 states. It operates through a network of branches nationwide. The company offers both life and supplemental health insurance policies, sold both to individuals and through workplace contracts.

Types of Insurance

Amalgamated Life VS Liberty National Life

Life Insurance: Liberty National offers both term and whole life insurance policies, both individually through its branches and as workplace policies covering current employees. Liberty National life insurance policies are portable, meaning that employees can continue coverage if they leave the employ of a workplace customer through which they secure their initial coverage. Liberty National focuses on individual, single parent and family policies, covering both individually insured customers as well as dependent spouses and children.

Supplemental Health and Accident Insurance: Liberty National Life provides a variety of supplemental health and accident insurance policies. None of the company’s policies are intended to provide primary health insurance coverage as do the quotes from the insurance Provider health coverage page. Rather, Liberty National pays benefits to the insured individual in the event of cancer diagnosis, critical illness, hospitalization for specific reasons, and Medicare supplementation.

Liberty National Life defines cancer and other critical illnesses in narrow terms for purposes of benefits payments. In terms of hospitalization, Liberty National Life provides supplemental health insurance policies that pay for hospital intensive care or for hospitalization resulting from an accident. It also provides a policy that will supply the insured with some of his lost income as a result of being hospitalized for a reason covered by the policy.

Liberty National Life also provides an accident insurance policy, by which it will pay benefits defined by the policy, for reasons also defined by the policy.

Liberty National Life offers Medicare supplementary insurance, which helps the insured to cover the costs of health care that are not paid by Medicare. This requires that the insured be eligible for Medicare, of course.

The Bottom Line

Amalgamated Life and Liberty National Life maintain and serve specific customer groups. Amalgamated Life begins only with union members, but can expand to non-union members when individuals change jobs. In contrast, Liberty National Life makes no union membership distinction among workplace customers and will sell insurance policies directly to individuals.
