Getting health insurance with lupus

Life insurance for individuals with lupus can be difficult to get, especially if you have systemic lupus erythematosos or SLE. There are four different types of lupus and if you have one of the less serious forms of lupus, then you may have a less difficult time getting life insurance than if you have SLE.

Read on to learn some tips for improving your chances of purchasing life insurance no matter what form of lupus you have. If need to get insurance quotes for comparison purposes use the free tool above.

Possible Ways to Get Life Insurance

If you suffer from SLE, then you already know that this disease can strike at any time and that there is no way to determine how it will affect the body. Because of this, insurance companies are more reluctant to insure people with lupus.

If, however, you are willing to purchase a policy with a smaller benefit, you may be able to purchase a regular whole life insurance policy with some companies.

Some insurance companies specialize in working with people with lupus. Those companies know that the death rate among people with lupus is only about 10% to 15%. Not to belittle that number, but that is fairly low for such a serious disease. With modern day treatments, people who have lupus can live a normal life span and, when you work with an insurance company that understands that, you are more likely to get the type of life insurance policy that you want.

Check your state’s Department of Insurance to see if your state has any insurance companies that work with people with pre-existing conditions.

Another consideration is to purchase small policies from several companies. This is legal, but you do have to inform each insurance company of the other policies you have. An insurance company will turn you down if they think you are purchasing too much life insurance because it suggests suspicious behavior. It is important to note that purchasing multiple policies from different companies can be very expensive, so it may not be an affordable option for you.

You also want to make sure that your lupus is in remission when you apply for your life insurance policy. While you cannot lie on your policy application about your condition, if you have been in remission for 6 months or longer, you have a higher chance of getting a life insurance policy. People who follow their doctor’s instructions, take all of their medications and have regular checkups will have a higher chance of approval as well.

Lastly, if you work for a company that offers insurance, then you should consider purchasing a life insurance policy through them. While company policies will vary, typically you can purchase two to two and a half times your annual income, combined with a small policy from a private company you will have a reasonably good life insurance benefits for your beneficiary.

Consider Alternative Policy Types

If your condition is serious and you can’t get the life insurance coverage that you desire, you can consider other types of insurance policies, such as term life insurance, death and dismemberment insurance and burial insurance.

Term life insurance may or may not be possible depending on your condition. If you are very sick, then the insurance company may turn you down immediately. If you are in remission, however, and your prognosis is good, you have a good chance of purchasing a term life insurance policy.

The downside to this type of policy is that it has no cash value and it will expire after a certain amount of time. You may also be limited in terms of how long you can purchase the policy for because of your condition. For example, the insurance company may require you to purchase an annual policy with a new physical and blood work each year to check your condition before they will renew.

A death and dismemberment policy is very affordable, however, it is a very restrictive policy that only offers a benefit if your life is ended by an accident. If you have a high-risk job and you are worried for your family, then this is a viable option.

It is important to note that a death and dismemberment policy doesn’t offer a benefit if you die while having surgery, die from your disease, or even die from natural causes; it only covers accidents such as auto accidents, industrial accidents and so on. If you are disabled in an accident, the benefit will be paid as well. The death and/or permanent injuries must happen within a certain time frame from the accident in order to get the benefit.

Burial insurance is another option for you to consider. No, this isn’t life insurance, but it will take the financial burden off your family in terms of paying for the funeral expenses. Burial insurance is sometimes called final expense insurance and it is a life insurance. The maximum policy purchase is usually only $10,000. This policy is a lifetime policy and the premiums never change. To get burial insurance you don’t have to submit to a physical or health exam.

You can purchase burial insurance from an insurance broker or from a funeral company. If you purchase it from a funeral company, make sure that the company is well established and stable. If you purchase a policy from a company that goes out of business your money is lost to you; you can’t get your premiums back or get the benefit paid out.

While these two options aren’t perfect, providing your loved ones with some sort of benefit is better than not having one at all.

Buying Your Insurance Policy

Unfortunately, with a pre existing condition, you will probably pay much higher premiums for your life insurance than you would if you were in good health. This doesn’t mean that you should automatically accept whatever quote your insurance agent gives you. It will behoove you to shop around for your insurance and only purchase once you are sure that you are getting the lowest rate.

You have several options when it comes to finding the lowest price possible; one is to use a third party rate quote tool.

The first benefit to using an online insurance quote tool is that they are free for you to use. These devices provide you with a list of quotes from reputable companies that are ready to offer you a policy. This takes a lot of the guesswork out of selecting the right insurance company.

You probably already know about all the big name insurance companies, but they aren’t the only companies that sell life insurance. You might be surprised to learn that there are great companies that don’t sell insurance nationwide that you might never have considered if you didn’t use a health insurance quote tool. You may find that your best rates come from local insurance companies.

Everything that you need is located in one place, you fill out one set of forms and you get the quotes that you need. In about 15 minutes, you can have all of the information that you need about your life insurance options. Give the life insurance quote tool a try right now!
