USAA Pet Insurance Overview

According to the National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA), more than 85 million families own pets in the U.S. This is up from 56 percent of U.S. households in 1988, the first year the survey was conducted.

With so many families owning pets, it’s important to protect them from illness and injury, as well as continue preventive health visits.

If you are a member of USAA, you’ll be able to bundle your policies together, including auto insurance, renters and homeowners coverage, personal property insurance, flood insurance, small business insurance, and pet insurance.

USAA’s pet insurance is provided in partnership with Embrace Pet Insurance. These policies for pet owners include coverage for many different accidents and illnesses.

What does USAA pet insurance cover?

USAA pet insurance is available under two different plans: Accident & Illness and Accident-Only.

  • Accident & Illness plan: Covers most essential veterinary services needed to treat injuries and illnesses, including chronic conditions (like allergies), cancer treatment, congenital conditions, MRIs, CT scans, ultrasounds and X-rays, hospitalization and surgery, and exam fees.
  • Accident-Only plan: Only covers injuries, such as those related to poisoning, foreign body ingestion, bloating, cuts, and lacerations.

Accident-Only comes with a 90% reimbursement rate, a $100 deductible, and a coverage limit of $5,000 per year. Dogs over 14 will automatically convert to this type of coverage, because USAA’S pet insurance for older pets does not cover illnesses.

USAA insurance also offers its members a Wellness Rewards plan for coverage of preventive pet care. This plan allows you to set funds aside for routine health services such as:

  • Routine vet visits
  • Core vaccinations for dogs
  • Dog microchip costs
  • The cost to spay or neuter
  • Grooming and nail trimming
  • Massage therapy
  • Dog training classes
  • Teeth cleaning costs
  • Burial or cremation

Wellness Rewards also offers reimbursements for everyday veterinary, training, and grooming costs.

Customers can choose an annual limit of $250, $450, or $650. It should be noted, though, that any funds left in your account at the end of the year are non-refundable.

How much does USAA pet insurance cost?

When comparing pet insurance, like other types of insurance, it’s important to note that USAA pet insurance costs will vary depending on your chosen policy.

Accident-Only policies generally cost less than more comprehensive coverage that reimburses pet owners for both accidents and injuries. The age of your pet and your pet’s breed will also affect your USAA insurance quotes.

USAA’s pet insurance pricing is determined by Embrace pet insurance. Prices are generally affordable, with monthly rates starting at $13 for dogs and $8 for cats.

Rates will vary based on your policy, the coverage you select, and the reimbursement rate you select. The Wellness Rewards program is offered at a flat rate for all pets regardless of their breed and age.

USAA does not offer unlimited policies, although it has increased its annual maximum to a generous $30,000.

Are there any discounts?

Monthly premiums vary, but available discounts include:

  • An automatic 15% discount for USAA members
  • 5% discount for insuring multiple pets
  • 5% discount for active-duty military

This means you could save up to 25% on your coverage when you buy through USAA.

Additionally, your annual deductible is automatically reduced by $50 for each year your pet goes without receiving a claim reimbursement. You can also save an additional $12 by paying the annual premium upfront.

Does USAA pet insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

No pet insurance company offers protection for pre-existing conditions, and this is true of USAA insurance as well. However, while some pet insurance companies have a blanket exclusion for pre-existing conditions, USAA is not as restrictive.

It does not cover incurable pre-existing complaints, but if your pet suffers a curable condition and was cured more than 12 months before suffering the condition again, it may be covered by your policy.

Is there any waiting period for USAA pet insurance?

USAA policies have a 14-day waiting period for illnesses and a two-day waiting period for accidents. It also has a six-month waiting period for orthopedic claims, although this can be reduced to 14 days with an appropriate orthopedic note.

The note is essentially an assessment of the orthopedic condition of your pet before the commencement of the insurance policy. If your pet is clear, it means that USAA can protect this type of condition right away.

IS USAA pet insurance worth it?

According to some USAA pet insurance reviews, USAA is considered a good quality pet insurance company because it offers access to Embrace Pet Insurance at greatly reduced rates.

However, its lack of unlimited coverage and the long wait for claims processing are highlighted as potential drawbacks.

Also, USAA’s pet insurance and pet life insurance are only available to military members and their immediate families.

If you are not a USAA member, you can still apply for pet insurance through Embrace. Your rates and discounts will vary greatly, however.

This doesn’t mean that USAA’s pet insurance is all bad, though. What distinguishes USAA pet insurance apart from other companies is the generous discounts, and special coverage offered to current or former active-duty military members and their families.

Unlike some insurance companies, USAA has a flexible policy when it comes to pre-existing conditions. If your pet has been without symptoms or treatment for at least a year, the condition is no longer considered pre-existing.

USAA Pet Insurance Review: The Bottom Line

If you’re eligible for USAA pet insurance because you’re a USAA member, this insurance coverage is a great option for keeping your pet happy and healthy without breaking the bank. Its affordability and flexibility in customizing a policy to suit your needs will benefit more than just your pet.

USAA pet insurance costs will vary depending on the policy, so make sure to research what kind of coverage your pet will need, especially if you have a breed that is prone to health concerns.
