Changes in Florida Home Insurance

In the 2004-2005 year the company paid out $4.4 billion in claims due to hurricane damage for Floridians. The results of this and other natural disasters are hard to deny. In recent years insurers like Allstate Floridian, State Farm Florida and Nationwide Insurance of Florida have stopped offering coverage to homeowners they once insured. In 2008 the largest private home insurer in the state, State Farm, announced that they would not write any new Florida policies. The company put the blame on state legislation that required insurers to drop rates claiming that the rate cuts were just too high to sustain the business.

Allstate, Liberty Mutual and Nationwide had already begun to pull back on business in the state before State Farm did the same. There are still companies that insure Florida residents. In 2008 the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation listed these companies as the top property insurers in the state: Citizens Property, State Farm, Universal Property, Allstate Floridian and Nationwide. Only Allstate Floridian fell off of this list in 2009.

Despite the fact that Florida fared better in regards to hurricanes in the past couple of years, the insurance companies still felt the effects of past claims. Two companies in the state, First Commercial Insurance Company and Property Insurance Company were ordered into liquidations. Add all this up and there just aren’t as many companies offers protection to Florida dwellers as there used to be.

It’s hard to find homeowners insurance in FL, but not impossible! Make your Florida homeowners insurance quotes search easier – just enter your zip code in now to start!
