The Lowdown

  • The GEICO DriveEasy app evaluates your driving habits, such as when you drive and how many times you brake hard.
  • GEICO advertises that DriveEasy can save you up to 25% on your car insurance.
  • DriveEasy isn’t available everywhere yet.

GEICO DriveEasy is the latest telematics program designed to save you money on your auto insurance. The program is designed to save you up to 25%, provided you have good driving habits.

Whether you are looking to buy GEICO car insurance and want to save money right off the bat or you already have GEICO and want to see what else is out there, shopping around will allow you to find the best deals on car insurance.

How does GEICO DriveEasy work?

DriveEasy is one of the simplest telematics programs out there.  You just enroll in the program and download the app. When you drive, the app tracks you and then downloads the information. There is no device that has to be installed in your vehicle.

You can also enroll your family members and see each other’s driving scores. This lets you have a friendly family competition to see who’s better.

The GEICO DriveEasy discount can go up to 25% if you have great driving habits. This can really decrease your GEICO auto insurance rates. However, if you have poor driving skills, your auto insurance rates can actually increase.

It’s no secret that your driving record affects your auto insurance rates. Let’s take a look at just how your driving affects your GEICO rates.

GEICO Average Annual Auto Insurance Rates by Driving Record

Clean Record$2,145.96

With 1 DUI$4,875.87

The DriveEasy app lets you see your driving habits in real time so you can see potential problems. You can see recent trips, current score, and how you’re doing over time.

What driving habits does the GEICO DriveEasy app monitor?

DriveEasy looks at multiple factors to determine your score, which then determines if you get a discount and how much it is.

The factors the DriveEasy app monitors are:

  • Distracted driving
  • The time of day you drive
  • Distance driven
  • Hard breaking
  • Cornering speed
  • Weather
  • Type of road
  • Driving smoothness

Distracted driving is one of the items DriveEasy looks to combat. This includes holding your phone if you are going more than six miles an hour and making phone calls without using Bluetooth.

Reducing distracted driving is especially important since according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2,841 people were killed in 2018 from distracted driving.

DriveEasy doesn’t distinguish between you or your passenger using your phone to change the song you’re listening to, for example. It will still count as distracted driving.

However, if you are the passenger in the vehicle but DriveEasy records the drive, you can go into the app and delete the trip.

Who is eligible for GEICO DriveEasy?

GEICO DriveEasy is available for current GEICO customers, but it’s not available everywhere yet. Currently, the program is only available in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

DriveEasy may be available in other states at some point.

How does DriveEasy affect your phone and protect your privacy?

DriveEasy runs in the background on your phone so it can drain your battery, especially during a trip. Your location permissions and tracking have to be on the whole time, but the app should go to sleep when you’re not driving.

GEICO claims that the information gathered in the app is stored in the U.S. The company also says that it can’t read your texts or record your phone calls.

Is GEICO DriveEasy worth it?

If you’re looking for affordable GEICO auto insurance, discounts are the way to go.  Although the DriveEasy discount looks great on paper, it might not be the right one for you.

Whether or not DriveEasy is worth it for you really depends on your driving habits. If you are a relatively safe driver or don’t drive very often during peak times, you may see a discount on your auto insurance rates.

However, keep in mind that the information from the app can actually raise your rates if your score isn’t great.
