Your pet is important to you, as such you want to ensure that you have the ability to take care of your pet under any circumstances. That is where pet insurance can make a difference.

Read on to learn what you should look for from your pet insurance policy, what the benefits are of choosing pet insurance and what you can expect to get coverage for in the event that your pet becomes ill.

What to Look for From a Pet Insurance Policy

Much like health insurance for humans, there are a number of options for you to choose from with your pet insurance policy. Understanding your options is an important element of choosing correctly. Below are a few things that you will want to think about before making your final decision.

First of all, you will need to decide what type of coverage you want. You can choose:

  • Accident coverage only, which applies if your pet is struck by a vehicle, falls, etc. and gets injured. This type of policy will not cover care for illness or regular check ups.
  • Dental and prescription. Often you will see these two options sold together, but some insurance companies sell them separately. In nearly every instance, you will have to purchase this type of coverage separately from a standard pet insurance policy.
  • Exotic Pet Insurance. You will also find that if you have a pet that is considered exotic, (basically, any pet that is not a dog or a cat), you will have to purchase a separate policy for general health care, such as regular check ups and a separate policy to cover other health issues such as illness, accident and so on.
  • Close to Comprehensive. For dogs and cats, you can purchase a health insurance plan that covers pretty much anything but pre-existing conditions. This type of plan covers Illnesses, accidents and injuries, surgeries, cancer treatment and more. Some plans will offer acupuncture, chiropractic, MRI, CT scans and X-rays as well.

There are some other considerations:

  • Single Plan- There are some companies that provide everything that you need in a single plan. The benefit of that is that you won’t have separate bills for each type of insurance that you purchase. This can save you time in an emergency and reduce confusion about the type of care your pet can receive.
  • Caps- You will also want to look for an insurance company that allows you to choose your cap on the total care your pet can receive. The truth is that this cap can be very low so it is up to you to ensure that you have enough coverage to provide your pet with the care that it needs, when it needs it.
  • Deductibles– You also need to understand the situation with deductibles. Most people treat their pet insurance like they do health insurance and believe that there is an out of pocket max that they have to meet each year for the insurance to take over. The truth is, however, is that there is no max out of pocket with most pet insurance policies.

When you choose a deductible, that deductible is based on each visit to the vet. This means that if you choose a $500 deductible then that is how much you have to pay for each visit to the vet before your pet insurance starts to pay.

There may be an exception to this rule; however, overall, this is simply how insurance companies offer pet insurance at such low rates. In fact, rates are in the $20 to $40 a month range, which is very affordable for insurance coverage.

You also need to be aware of any restrictions set forth by your policy. For example, most policies don’t cover preventative care outside of well check up for your pets. If your vet determines that a surgery could prevent a future problem with your pet, your insurance likely won’t pay for it.

The Benefits of Choosing Pet Insurance

There is actually some debate as to whether pet insurance has any value for a pet owner. In order to determine whether pet insurance is right for your pet you need to ask yourself a couple of specific questions about the best pet insurance policy for you.

You see, there are generally two types of pet owners. Those that treat their pet like it is a member of the family and those that, well, treat their pet like a pet. In most cases, those that treat their pets like family will do anything to ensure that their pet stays healthy. This includes things like dialysis for they pet, chemotherapy and so on. If you are a person that will go to the ends of the earth to keep your pet alive, then pet insurance can save you thousands of dollars.

This doesn’t mean that pet insurance won’t benefit you if your pet has a different place in your life. However, if the extent of health care you will allow for your pet includes basic care such as de-worming, well pet visits, medication for an infection, and so on, then you may not need pet insurance. In this case it is unlikely that you would ever exceed your deductible requirements for each visit to the vet.

Pet insurance is very affordable, however, and you may find that maintaining a minimum policy is well worth it in the long run. This is especially true if they find something wrong with your pet that can be fixed without any long term ill effects to your pet. For example, if your cat swallows a foreign object that it can’t pass, the surgery would cost about $1700, which is almost the total cost of years of paying premiums for the pet insurance.

If you pet is never ill during its life, then you may end up wondering why you purchased pet insurance. However, it only takes one serious incident to pay for the policy. After all, any type of health insurance, whether for a pet or a human, is a just in case policy.
