How do I check my health insurance status if I purchased a plan through the healthcare exchange marketplace website?

You can check your marketplace plan enrollment and coverage when you log into the website. When you log in, you can click on the applications and coverage section and see a summary of your coverage if you are actively enrolled in a health insurance plan.

If you do not see a summary of coverage when you were expecting to, you can call the health insurance company and ask about your enrollment and request documentation of coverage, if enrolled.

Your first premium when you enroll in a plan should be paid directly to your health insurance company. If you believe something went wrong with your enrollment, contact the healthcare marketplace.

If you recently applied for coverage and are waiting for the results of your application and confirmation of status, there are a few things you can do.

After you apply, you will get an eligibility notice and application ID in one of the following ways:

  • sent by mail
  • sent as a message on the healthcare exchange website
  • explained to you over the phone

If you never received confirmation of your application, you should call the healthcare marketplace. Once you do get your application ID, you can type it in and see all the plans that are available to you and compare them side by side.

After you choose a plan and pay your premium directly to the health insurance company, you should be enrolled in the plan and your health coverage should start shortly after, if not immediately.

How do I check my health insurance status if I have coverage through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)?


If you want to check the status of your enrollment in a government program such as Medicaid or CHIP, you should contact the agency directly.

The number to contact your local agency should be located on the back of your eligibility notice or your insurance card. You should be sent a card if you were enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP.

If you did not receive a card, you should call your local agency to officially check your insurance status. However, if you did not receive a card, but you did receive a letter stating your eligibility, you should be able to receive medical services.

How do I check my health insurance status if I have Medicare?

If you are enrolled in Medicare, you should receive a Medicare card in the mail. It is a red, white, and blue card that lists the following:

  • your name
  • your ID number, which consists of your social security number and other identifying letters and numbers at the end, in most cases

If you are automatically enrolled in Medicare because you are already receiving certain benefits or have a disability under the age of 65, you should receive your card in the mail three months before your 65th birthday or prior to the 25th month of you receiving social security benefits.

If you did not receive your card in the mail, need to make changes, or are having your issues with your enrollment, you should contact the Social Security administration.

You can also check your enrollment through the website using the following information:

  • your name
  • your date of birth
  • your ID number

How do I change my coverage or healthcare status?


If you want to cancel your coverage and change your healthcare status, you can do this at any time on the healthcare exchange marketplace.

Keep in mind that if you cancel your coverage and do not replace it, you may be subject to the individual mandate penalty fines for not having insurance.

You can only change your insurance plan outside of the open enrollment period if you qualify for a special enrollment period. Qualifying events for a special enrollment period include the following situations:

  • marriage
  • divorce
  • having a baby

If you leave your job and lose your employer-based coverage, you may also qualify for a special enrollment period or COBRA coverage.
