Why is auto insurance so high for teenagers?

There are many factors that auto insurance companies consider when they set auto insurance rates. For instance, companies consider the car you drive, your age, your overall driving record, and where you live.

For teenagers, their age and lack of driving experience are two of the top factors determining their auto insurance rates. Teenagers also present a greater risk to other drivers based on the teens’ decision-making.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, teen drivers in the United States are three times as likely to be involved in fatal car crashes than drivers aged 20 and older.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cited this 2019 data from the IIHS website and discussed eight risk factors with teen drivers.

  • Among these risk factors were the lack of seat belt usage, distracted driving, drowsy driving, reckless driving, and impaired driving.
  • Nighttime driving also presents a challenge to younger drivers.
  • Teenagers also tend to drive recklessly when they only have other teenagers as passengers.

In addition, teens who recently earned their driver’s licenses are the most likely to be involved in car accidents.

When you look at the statistics, you can understand why many state DMVs set limits to permit drivers to limit their nighttime driving. These departments also limit the number of teenaged passengers that the learning drivers can have per outing.

How can you lower your auto insurance rates with a 16-year-old driver?

There are three things you can do to limit how high your auto insurance rates will be while you insure your young driver:

  • Discuss and practice safe driving behaviors.
  • Look for discounts with your auto insurance company.
  • Put your teen in a safer car.

Let’s explore these options further.

Practicing Safe Driving

As your teen is getting ready to drive, you will often serve as their primary supervising driver. Besides helping them study for required written driving exams, you can give them tips about safe and defensive driving. Also, you can enroll them in defensive driving courses, where available.

Safe Driving Discounts

A teen driver may earn auto insurance discounts for safe driving, earning good grades, staying away at college, and taking a defensive driving course. Some insurance companies will give you a discount just for adding a teen driver to your policy.

Some teenagers may also get accident forgiveness. However, that might only be available for 18-year-olds or 19-year-olds. Usually, companies limit accident forgiveness to drivers who have at least three years of good driving.

Driving Safer Cars

Sports cars often raise auto insurance rates because sports car owners may drive past the speed limit. These cars are also targets for theft. Your teen needs a car that will safely get them from A to B and may come with increased safety features.

Many newer models have safety features like lane-keeping assistance, rearview cameras, and emergency auto braking. And some insurance companies will give you discounts for having these features on your car.

These are just some things that can keep your teenager safe while making your auto insurance rate increase more manageable.
