The lowdown...

  • Some states don’t require an insurance policy with a car registration
  • It’s possible to not have a license and still maintain car insurance
  • Affordable car insurance is possible if you’re not going to be on the road

If you don’t have a driving license, you have to look at the validity of a car insurance policy. Furthermore, you need to know how to get a policy if you don’t have a license.

It is possible to have car insurance without a license. However, there are some things you will need to do, mainly based on the state you reside in.

If you currently have no driver’s license but want the best auto insurance out there, enter your ZIP code above and compare at least three to four policies today!

Car Registration vs. Driving on the Road

There are two different ways that states require you to have car insurance. The first is that if you are going to register a car, you need to have a license. The second is that if you plan on taking a car onto a road, then you need to have a license.

You, therefore, need to look at your state requirements. If your state requires that you have car insurance any time you have a car registered, then it might not be necessary for you to have a license.

However, you will still need to maintain auto insurance on the vehicle for as long as it is registered.

If you don’t have a license and you don’t have a car, then it is not necessary for you to have auto insurance.

Regardless of what state you live in, if you have a car, it must be registered. The vehicle has to have a tag and be registered with the state.

You will need to see if you are required to have auto insurance on it or not if you don’t have a license based upon state requirements. Obviously, if you do have a license and therefore plan on taking it on the road, you will need to have an insurance policy in place, no matter what state you are in.

Overcoming Not Having a Driving License

If you don’t have a driving license, but you are required to have auto insurance, there are ways of getting around the situation. You will need to prove that you have a disability that prevents you from driving. You need to also prove that you will not be driving the vehicle.

It’s also important to show a licensed driver who will be driving the vehicle. Otherwise, it begs the question as to why you have the vehicle at all.

Now, there are going to be some instances where you have a vehicle on your property, which means it has to be registered with the state. If you don’t have a license, you cannot drive it. However, a valid insurance policy might still be required.

Top reasons you might be saving a car that you can’t drive include:

  • Keeping a collectible
  • Getting ready to sell a car
  • Gifting a car for a loved one when they become of age

Until you can sell the vehicle or gift it, you must follow all rules and regulations as required by your state.

Obtaining Affordable Auto Insurance

If you’re required to have an insurance policy on a vehicle and you don’t have a driver’s license, you might be able to get an affordable policy. If you’re unable to drive because of a disability or you have no plans on driving the vehicle because it’s a gift for someone, this needs to be explained to the insurance company.

Often, your situation would fall under the “low mileage” category. Technically, you’re not putting any miles on it.

However, you still have to have the insurance policy, so your goal is to spend as little on the road as possible.

Some insurance companies will ask for you to prove that you’re not putting mileage on it, which means using an electronic chip that transmits the distance to the insurance company periodically.

When they see that the vehicle is, in fact, not being driven, the insurance company will provide you with a more affordable premium.

Car insurance can be valid if you don’t have a driving license. However, your goal is to compare quotes to get the insurance as cheap as possible. Online quotes will help you to get the policy.

You might also need to provide additional documents to the insurance company to show that you are either not going to drive the vehicle (such as naming another primary driver) or you no longer have driving privileges because of a disability.
