The lowdown...

  • The Motor Club of America provides coverage, but this is different from auto insurance
  • Many auto insurance policies also offer roadside assistance
  • MCA plans do not replace auto insurance needs

The Motor Club of America is one of the more recognized names in the car industry. People rely on this group annually for thousands of instances where roadside assistance is required.

Often, though, people will confuse the services and coverage offered by the Motor Club of America with that which is provided by a typical car insurance company.

It all comes down to understanding the difference between the two and realizing even though you have a plan with Motor Club of America, you still need to have a separate car insurance plan.

Motor Club of America plans and auto insurance policies offered by carriers all across the company are entirely independent of one another.

Some of the plans do have the opportunity to have some overlap, but the big differences come down to how the coverage works, what is covered, and how it is going to help you become indemnified if you are in an accident.

What is the Motor Club of America?

The Motor Club of America prides themselves on being a reliable and trustworthy motor club that drivers in the United States and Canada have the ability to join.

They are all about allowing people to get out there, on the open road, and understand that they have service 24-hours each day, seven days per week.

The Motor Club of America was formed over 86-years ago with the idea of being a customer care leader, offering a variety of options to protect drivers that work in tandem, on top of, what you would typically buy as part of your standard car insurance policy.

What Does the Membership Cover?

The biggest thing that you are going to get from a plan with the Motor Club of America is that of roadside assistance. You can have plans that will help you no matter where you are in the United States and Canada, around the clock.

If you break down, a tow truck can be sent out to help you with your car, your motorcycle, even a trailer if that is something that is a part of the plan. Road safety is important and roadside assistance helps a lot.

The turnaround time that can be expected with a plan such as this is within 30-minutes.

Traffic and weather are going to have the chance of delaying this, as laid out on their website, but the idea is hat the membership is going to get a tow truck out to you to help in as little time as possible.

Coverage for Hospital Time

You also have the ability to extend the plan that you buy to help you with some coverage if you end up in the hospital. The plans that you can buy could allow you to recover $150 per day for the time that you spend in the hospital, up to a pre-defined maximum period.

While this is a nice benefit, this is something that is going to mainly pale in comparison to what you will get from a standard car insurance policy.

The Difference Between MCA and Auto Insurance

We have established at this point that when you are a part of the Motor Club of America, the plan is going to help you with roadside assistance and some minimal hospital reimbursement, but what else?

Auto insurance is what is going to have to fill in the rest and, a lot of times is likely even to duplicate what the membership to the MCA is going to give to you.

Auto insurance has two main optional coverage options

  • comprehensive coverage
  • collision coverage

These are two coverages that are just not available on any of the plans being offered by the Motor Club of America. At their core, collision coverage is going to help to protect you if you hit something while the car is in motion.

Comprehensive coverage would protect you, for example, if a tree had fallen on top of your vehicle.

Bodily Injury and Liability

Bodily injury and liability is also something that is not going to be covered by the Motor Club of America plans but is instead something that you are going to be purchasing as part of your auto insurance.

Liability is going to help you, if you are liable for getting into a car accident and causing damage to another’s vehicle, or another type of property, for example.

Bodily injury is going to help you with medical damages for the other party when you are at fault, far above and beyond the typical $150 per day reimbursement that you get from the Motor Club of America.

Uninsured and Underinsured Coverage

There are other types of insurance that you can choose for extra protection. These types of insurance include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverages.

Say you get in an accident with someone who does not have auto insurance, they are considered to be uninsured, and they are liable for the crash.

The uninsured coverage limits will help to protect and indemnify you in these instances.

States, such as Florida, require that to have a car on the road, you have auto insurance. It is great to be a member of the Motor Club of America, but auto insurance provides essential and extensive coverage above and beyond roadside assistance.

Your auto insurance policy, for a premium surcharge, can even provide the same type of roadside assistance coverage that the MCA does.

The Motor Club of America serves a great purpose for owners of automobiles, and it is a good club to be a part of. It does not, however, replace the need for you to have auto insurance.

Car insurance plans have limits that are above and beyond anything the plans the MCA offers.

Check the plans and compare them to the insurance carriers that are out there, the different coverages provided, and the associated limits. When you compare as a consumer, you will see the value and real need of a separate car insurance plan to protect yourself.

Shop the insurance market and compare what is being offered by the various carriers. The more that you compare, the better of value that you are going to get.

We all have unique needs from a coverage perspective, and the more work we put in to find the ideal policy, the better off you will be.
